Back in the early 20th century, J.A. Thompson, a prominent figure in our town's lumber industry, took on a project that would leave a lasting impression on our local architecture. His carriage house, built with incredible attention to detail and a forward-thinking approach, is now a cherished single-family home that reflects both his vision and the transformation of a traditional building.

Getting to Know the Carriage House

You might have heard of carriage houses, sometimes called remises or coach houses. In North America, these were the outbuildings designed to store horse-drawn carriages and all their gear. Most of these were two-story structures, with the upper level often serving as living quarters for the staff.

Design and Function

For smaller city homes, carriage houses could be quite modest—just enough space for a small carriage. But for grand estates like Thompson's, they could be quite grandiose, accommodating multiple carriages, horses, and even hay. The staff who took care of the horses often lived in the quarters above, and while some horses might have been kept in the carriage house, they usually had their own separate stables.

From Mansion to Mystery

While J.A. Thompson's carriage house is a beloved piece of history, his grand mansion has vanished from sight. The fate of the mansion remains a mystery, and as the new owner of the carriage house, I’m especially eager to dig into this enigma. What happened to Thompson's grand residence? This is a puzzle I’m excited to solve.

Enduring Craftsmanship: From Past to Present

As the town’s tastes evolved, so did Thompson's carriage house. Unfortunately, modern updates have coated much of its original charm with millennial grey paint. I’m planning to restore the house to a color scheme that harks back to the 1930s, even though it’s possible that the carriage house might not have been painted at all back then. Despite these changes, the house remains a testament to incredible craftsmanship and adaptive reuse, blending its historical essence with modern comforts.

A Lesson in Heritage

J.A. Thompson’s carriage house is more than just a historical building. It’s a reminder that these structures were not just functional but also symbols of creativity and community spirit. Thompson’s decision to build such a well-crafted space shows his dedication to leaving a meaningful legacy, both in architecture and in the lives of those who lived there.

Celebrating Legacy

Today, as we look at J.A. Thompson’s carriage house, we’re not just admiring its transformation. We’re celebrating the vision, craftsmanship, and community spirit that it represents. By preserving and valuing such landmarks, we help keep their stories alive and enrich our understanding of the past.

In essence, J.A. Thompson's carriage house-turned-home is a shining example of how historical buildings can evolve to meet modern needs while keeping their unique charm. As I dive into the mystery of Thompson’s mansion, I’m thrilled to uncover the stories that have shaped our community.
